TITANS 6TH / 7TH AT STATE!!
The Titans capped off a great year with the Boys finishing 6th in State and the Girls 7th. Except for golf, these are the highest State finishes at Syracuse. Very impressive results from some great student/athletes.
State was run over the hilly 3.0 mile course at Sugarhouse Park in SLC. Hannah Williams completed a perfect season- our #1 finisher in every race- by placing 12th in 19:21. She just missed making the All-State Team. McKayla Williams was right behind placing 22nd in 19:42. Mikelann Wilcox was one of the top freshman finishers in the race placing 46th in 20:21. Abby Rich battled injuries all season but still came through to run 20:33 to place 53rd. Kiana Tebbs’ 21:14 was good enough to place 70th, while Taylee Hamblin capped of a great first year by placing 79th in 21:32. Aubrey Eddy’s 23:15 was good enough for 104th. Aubrey’s value to the TEAM should not be measured in the points she scored. Having her lead by example was far more important to our success. The combined times of our top five was 2:40 faster than last year at State. Hannah and McKayla made the State All-Time list for the course and Mikelann just missed it.
Austin Costley also made it a perfect season as he was again our top finisher. He placed 22nd overall while running 16:28. Jake Rossmango’s 16:50 was good enough for 38th. Preston Williams capped off a great sophomore year finishing 53rd in 17:05. Phillip Helms wound up his senior year by placing 62nd in 17:13. Freshman Brandon Yardley had a great race placing 67th in 17:16. He was the 4th freshman finisher in the race. Dallin Riggs battled a cold and still placed 89th while running 17:44. Tyrell Pearce finished 98th even though he was running on a sprained ankle. His time was 17:54. Austin and Jake made the State All-Time list for the course.
This was a great TEAM effort by the Titans. And that means all 35 members, not just the 14 who ran.
NOW WHAT
Those needing a little time to get some injuries heeled up should do so now. If healthy, keep running. STORY: As a sophomore, Jared was about the #12-15 runner at Davis. He wanted to be better. As a junior, he was 3rd in State in XC. He wanted to be better. As a senior, he was the 5A XC MVP, national Foot Locker finalist, won three firsts at State in Track, and ran the fastest 5000 for any high school runner in Utah history. How did he do it? He committed himself to become the best he could possibly become even though he didn’t know where that might lead.
Continued improvement as an individual and TEAM should be the goal of everyone. Let’s start working now towards bringing home some hardware from the 2009 State Championships.

Titan XC Update - Oct 20, 2008
WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES!!
A year ago, the Titan Boys placed last in the region with a score of 204 points, 30 behind 7th place. In 2008, they placed 2nd behind defending 5A State Champion Davis, 28 points ahead of 3rd place Weber. In 2007, the average time of the five scoring boys was 18:33. This year- 16:55. Impressive. The Lady Titans also showed dramatic change moving up from a 4th place finish in 2007 to also place 2nd behind nationally-ranked Davis. They also improved the average time for the top five from 20:38 to 20:11.
GIRLS RESULTS
As expected, Davis won the title and there was a tight battle for the next three spots. The Lady Titans scored 72 points to narrowly finish ahead of Weber (78) and Fremont (89). Layton finished with 134 points to secure the last spot at State. Hannah Williams struggled a little but still finished strong to place 9th in 19:30. McKayla Williams had her fastest mile average time of the year running 19:55 to finish 13th. Abby Rich also had her best race of the year as her 20:15 was good enough for 15th. Mikelann Wilcox had another great race to place 17th in 20:37, one spot ahead of Kiana Tebbs 18th place finish. This was Kiana’s best mile average of the year. Taylee Hamblin improved her best 3-mile time by 33 seconds to 20:54 to place 24th. Aubrey Eddy had her best race of the year as she ran 22:49 to finish 41st.
In the Junior Varsity race, Hilary Peterson ran great to finish 6th in 21:22. Running well to help Syracuse finish 3rd in the J.V. team race, were Sasha Russell (16th, 24:00), Mckenna Peterson (19th, 24:12), Haley Busby (24th, 24:38) and Kylin Long (27th, 29:00).
BOYS RESULTS
Once again, Davis took home the TEAM title. The Titans scored 69 points to place 2nd ahead of Weber (97), Fremont (130) and Viewmont (135).
Seven of the eight entered in the Varsity race had their best per mile averages of the year in an impressive TEAM performance. All ran smart making up several places over the last mile of the race. Austin Costley’s 16:33 was good enough to place 5th overall. Jake Rossmango (11th, 16:45) and Preston Williams (12th, 16:47) narrowly missed making the All-Region Team. Phillip Helms (20th, 17:15), Tyrell Pearce (21st, 17:16) and Brandon Yardley (22nd, 17:17) finished right together to ice the TEAM finish. Dallin Riggs was close behind running 17:28 to place 27th. Kyle Kelly ran 18:14 as a non-scorer in the Varsity race. This was over three minutes faster than he ran last year.
The J.V. Boys finished 4th. Alex Garrett (22nd, 18:35), Willis Ellsworth (23rd, 18:38) and Weston Atkins (24th, 18:38) finished right together to give us a good pack. Cody Trease (27th, 18:51), CJ Scothern (28th, 18:54), Steven Wilcox (29th, 19:17) and Christian Smith (30th, 19:19) were the other scoring athletes. Also running well were Nick Hilton (19:20), Dylan Rossmango (19:36), Clayton Bergloff (21:38), Grant Patterson (21:52), Ben Smith (22:28), Tyler Kutterer (22:42), and Kel Davis (23:54). Alex, Weston, Cody, CJ, and Dylan had their fastest per-mile averages of the year.
PERSONAL NOTE
This is about the 25th season I’ve coached Cross Country on the high school level. During that time I’ve been fortunate to have coached several teams that have won Region titles. This pair of 2nd-place finishes ranks right up there with any of the titles. To place that high after only two years is a real credit to a great group of hard-working and dedicated athletes.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as the Athletes of the Week were Aubrey Eddy and Clayton Bergloff, who have put in two great years of being quiet leaders of the TEAM. Their importance cannot be measured in the points that they score, but in how much they have pushed and helped others. These seniors will be missed!!
STATE TEAM PARTY
The Costley family will host the TEAM at a pasta dinner Tuesday evening at 5:30 pm.
STATE INFORMATION
State is this Wednesday. The Girls 5A race will begin at 3:30, the Boys at 4:00. Students will be excused at 12:00 and the bus will leave about 12:30. Parents: If you are planning on attending, the race is held at Sugarhouse Park in SLC. It’s tough to find parking- allow plenty of time.
STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS OUTLOOK
Davis High should easily defend their Girls’ title. The battle for second should come from American Fork, Bingham, Timpanogos, Skyline, Jordan, Alta and, yes, the Lady Titans. Individually, Jordan’s Danielle Menlove has won about everything she’s entered this year. 2006 Champion Shalaya Kipp of Skyline and Davis’ Candace Eddy may give her a battle.
For the Boys, Alta should prevent Davis from their third straight title. The Darts and American Fork should battle for 2nd and 3rd. After that, it’s all open between Copper Hills, Kearns, Hillcrest, Timpanogos, Weber and Syracuse. Individually, Davis’ Seth Gutzwiller has been running very well. Hillcrest’s Jason Lynch, Lone Peak’s Steve Morrin and Timpanogos’ Matt Liddle could challenge.

Update - October 13, 2008
Titan XC Update - Oct 13, 2008
OPEN REGION MEET AT FREMONT
There were some great performances at Fremont even though we just treated the meet as part of our last week of training prior to Region. The goal was to run conservative without taking any chances that might create or aggravate injuries. We also didn’t want to push so hard that there might be problems with lingering fatigue at Region. The outcome of the meet in that sense was successful. With all eight school in the region competing, the Titans finished 4th in both races while running conservatively. Even so, many had their fastest races of the year over the flat, three-mile course.
Hannah Williams again led the Lady Titans placing 4th in 18:57. McKayla Williams’ 20:07 was good enough for 12th. She was closely followed by Mikelann Wilcox, who had her best race of the year, running 20:19 to place 14th. Kiana Tebbs (27th, 20:58) and Taylee Hamblin (34th, 21:31) also had their fastest races of the year to round out the top five Lady Titans. Sasha Russell, Haley Busby, Tiffany Reed, Mckenna Peterson and Kylin Long also had their fastest per-mile averages of the year.
After running very conservatively for the first two miles (in about 35th place), Austin Costley moved up to finish 17th in 16:53. Using the same strategy to move up greatly were Phillip Helms (25th, 17:08), Preston Williams (30th, 17:22), Dallin Riggs (35th, 17:33) and Jake Rossmango (52nd, 17:55). Kyle Kelly and Brandon Yardley were right behind running 17:59 and 18:00. Willis Ellsworth, Alex Garrett, CJ Scothern, Nick Hilton, Christian Smith, Steve Wilcox, Dylan Rossmango, Grant Patterson and Ben Smith had their fastest per-mile averages of the year.
Even running a little under control, this was a great performance. It shows we are ready to “turn is loose” at Region.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Sasha Russell, who has only missed two practices since June 2nd (and has been on time twice since June 2nd) and Alex Garrett, who ran about 15 seconds per mile faster than any other race this year. While distance running isn’t Sasha’s “forte”, she nevertheless works hard knowing it will help her in Track and Field. The same can be said for Alex, who has not missed a practice in over two months.
REGION TEAM PARTY
Coach Rob Wilcox will host the TEAM at a pasta dinner Tuesday evening at 6:00 pm. His address is 1414 north, 5000 west in West Point.
REGION ONE CHAMPIONSHIPS
The meet will be held Wednesday, October 15th at Layton City Park. The schedule will be:
1:15- Excused from class
1:30- Bus leaves
3:00- Girls’ Junior Varsity Race
3:30- Boys’ Junior Varsity Race
4:00- Girls’ Varsity Race
4:30- Boys’ Varsity Race
5:15- Awards
REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS OUTLOOK
Davis High looks to be a lock for both Region titles. The Dart boys will try to make it 14-straight titles while the girls will be going for #4. While an upset is possible, the real battle will probably be for second place. In both races, Syracuse, Weber and Fremont should be the contenders. Weber may have a slight edge, but watch out for the Titans. At full strength, running with intelligence and intensity, Syracuse will have a great shot at finishing second- a great accomplishment.
Individually, Meghan Hedquist, Emily Hansen, Candace Eddy and Katie Swanson of Davis, Allyson Deeter of Weber, Amy Allred of Layton, and our own Hannah Williams should lead the charge for the title. Davis’ Seth Gutzwiller is running very well and will be hard to beat. Weber’s Russ Carnahan, Layton’s Tyson Butler and Austin Costley have been the top runners most of the year in the region.
One thing for certain: you will see about 300 athletes giving 100% and trying to do their individual best while helping their teams.

A coach can’t ask for more.
CONGRATS HALEY
Congratulations to Haley Busby for representing Syracuse City (and Syracuse Cross Country) at the Utah Miss Outstanding Teen pageant. The fact that she didn’t win proves that it was fixed!!!

GREAT WEEK FOR TITAN XC
This was a week in which great deal of progress was shown. There were some great workouts and a very tough race at Weber High. The benefits will hopefully be shown at the Region and State Championships.
OPEN REGION @ WEBER
With all of the region teams except Davis competing, the meet gave us a little indication of where things shape up at this time. The Girls placed 2nd behind Weber while the Boys tied for 2nd, though losing the tie-breaker to Fremont. Weber also won the boys.
The 3.1 mile course was very hilly and provided a real challenge. Hannah Williams was our top finisher in the ladies race as she placed 4th in 20:36. McKayla Williams (7th, 21:09), Abby Rich (9th, 21:43), Mikelann Wilcox (10th, 21:50), and Kiana Tebbs (18th, 22:55) were the other scoring athletes. Taylee Hamblin (19th, 23:01) and Aubrey Eddy (41st, 25:15) completed the varsity runners.
Austin Costley ran a tough race to finish 3rd in 17:32. Phillip Helms had another great race placing 7th in 17:54. Tyrell Pearce (11th, 18:12), Preston Williams (17th, 18:31) and Brandon Yardley (28th, 18:47) were our other scoring athletes. Dallin Riggs (29th, 18:51) and Kyle Kelly (37th, 19:08) completed the varsity squad.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Abby Rich, who continues to show improvement after battling injuries most of the season, and Tyrell Pearce, who has really made an impact on our TEAM in his first year of competing in Cross Country.

Update - September 22, 2008
Titan XC Update - Sept 22, 2008
DAVIS CLIPPER INVITATIONAL
Both Boys and Girls teams turned in great performances to place 2nd at the 21st Davis Clipper Invitational. This meet is for all of the Davis County schools. Davis High captured both titles for the 12th straight year. Finishing 2nd is a great accomplishment. Last year the girls finished 4th and the boys 8th. The Titans are definitely on the rise this year.
Leading the way for the girls were the Williams sisters. Hannah finished 7th running 17:42 over the 2.75 mile course. McKayla was right behind in 8th running 18:28. Abby Rich (11th, 19:00), Mikelann Wilcox (12th, 19:19), Kiana Tebbs (18th, 19:56) and Taylee Hamblin (19th, 20:03) ran very tough races to pace the Lady Titans.
Austin Costley and Jake Rossmango took the race out fast, leading for the first 1 ½ miles. Austin held on to finish 6th running 15:19. Preston Williams (10th, 15:40), Jake (12th, 15:41), Phillip Helms (20th, 15:58), Tyrell Pearce (22nd, 16:00), Dallin Riggs (29th, 16:25) and Kyle Kelly (39th, 16:35) rounded out the scoring for Syracuse.
WAHSATCH RENDEZVOUS
More evidence of great improvement was shown at the Wahsatch Rendezvous held at the Cottonwood Complex Saturday. With over 20 schools running, the girls finished 6th and the boys 8th. Last year they were 9th and 18th. In 2007 the total time for the seven scoring girls was 2:40:19. This year it was 2:29:57. The boys improved from 2:02:53 to 1:43:07, an average improvement of over 2 ½ minutes per runner.
The unique format consists of a series of seven races pitting all #7 runners against each other, #6 runners, etc. The points from the individual races are then added up to determine the team places. The course was 2.9 miles long. The girls seven scoring athletes were Hannah Williams (5th, 19:34), McKayla Williams (5th, 20:13), Abby Rich (6th, 20:47), Mikelann Wilcox (6th, 21:05), Kiana Tebbs (8th, 22:11), Taylee Hamblin (6th, 21:32), and Aubrey Eddy (9th, 24:32).
The boys 52 points, just six points out of sixth place. The scoring athletes for the Titans were Austin Costley (9th, 16:38), Jake Rossmango (6th, 16:53), Preston Williams (7th, 17:00), Tyrell Pearce (9th, 17:33), Phillip Helms (2nd, 17:20), Dallin Riggs (8th, 17:46), and Kyle Kelly (11th, 18:33). Brandon Yardley ran a great race to place 7th in the J.V. race running 17:37.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Taylee Hamblin, who had a great, breakout races at both meets this week, Phillip Helms, who continues to improve every week, and Kyle Kelly. Kyle’s combined times in the two races were more than nine minutes faster than last year. It shows what a year of hard work and dedication can do.
OPEN REGION MEET AT WEBER
Our only race this week will be Wednesday at Weber High. We will use the race to work on hills and mental toughness. It will be good preparation for State. The girls will run at 3:45 and the boys at 4:15. There will only be the two races.

Overall, it was a great meet after a hard week of workouts. Bigger and better results are just around the corner.
WORKOUTS
Great week of workouts. I was very impressed with the work ethic, but more impressed with the leadership so many of you are showing. It’s great to feel like I can tell you what to do and know that it will get done. THANKS to all who are working hard in so many ways to ensure the success of the TEAM.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as the first Athletes of the Week were are “fearless freshmen”, Mikelann Wilcox and Brandon Yardley. They both have been working hard all summer and had great races at the Grass Relays. I don’t know if the people Mikelann threw up on in the finish chute would agree with the choice, but they didn’t get a vote.
PRE-REGION
Wednesday, all of the Region One schools will be compete at the Pre-Region meet at Layton Commons Park. This will give us a chance to see how we stack up against the rest of the region early in the season. The course will be 2.0 miles long. The schedule is as follows:

DART CHALLENGE 5K
Good job by those who ran the Dart Challenge 5K Saturday. The times were much better than last year. Hannah Williams was the top Lady Titan running 19:58, 1:30 faster than last year. That was also her first sub-20 minute 5K. McKayla Williams (21:34), Mikelann Wilcox (23:39), Aubrey Eddy (25:12) and Sasha Russell (27:34) also ran well.
Preston Williams was the first finisher for the boys. He ran 18:17, 2:17 faster than last year. The next top finishes came from an injured Jake Rossmango (19:24), Brandon Yardley (19:34), Kyle Kelly (19:36), C.J. Scothern (20:13), Nick Hilton (20:14, 1:09 faster than last year), Jantzen Deppe (20:21), Weston Atkins (20:57), Clayton Bergloff (21:45, 5:14 faster than last year), Dylan Rossmango (22:31) and Cody Trease (22:53).
The race showed me many things, two of which stand out. We are way ahead of last year, BUT, we’ve still got a lot of work to do to get to where we want to be in October.
Complete results of the race can be found at: www.titanxc08.blogspot.com.
WORKOUTS THIS WEEK
MONDAY- 7:00 am at Fernwood. Meet at the campsite at 7:00 am or at the high school at 6:30 am.
TUESDAY- 7:00 pm at Steeds Park (1000 west 300 north, Clearfield). NOTE THAT WE WILL AGAIN MEET IN THE EVENING TUESDAY AND THURSDAY.
THURSDAY- 7:00 pm at Jensen Park
SATURDAY- Possible Mueller Park trail run. TBA later.
This is our last week of workouts that won’t be disrupted by races. It is VERY important that you make it to all of the TEAM workouts and also get in the mileage called for on the other days.
HOOPS TO JUMP THROUGH
Get your Physicals or “B” forms turned in. You must also have your tryout checklist completed and turned in. Pay your fee at the school. The District has increased the fee to $55 to cover the cost of transportation. If you qualify for free or reduced lunch, the fee may be waived- check in the office. Lets get these things taken care of early.
OLYMPICS
Try to catch as much of the Olympics (especially Track and Field) as possible. It’s great to see so many dedicated athletes reach their dreams of getting to the Olympics. At least in most sports. I don’t think it was Kobe Bryant’s life-long dream to play in the Olympics. But for most of the others, this is the highlight of their competitive lives.

Titan XC Update - August 11, 2008
HIGH ALTITUDE CAMP
Thanks to everyone that helped make the trip to the Uintah’s a huge success. A special thanks to Rob Wilcox for the use of about EVERYTHING we needed to survive the week. Also thanks to the Williams for the use of their “bus”, as well as Mr. Russell and Mr. Eddy for their support. A big thanks to Coach Talley, Coach Richardson, Steve Petty and Davis XC for teaming up with us to make the organization easier.
Highlights: Mile repeats at 9400 feet; Rob and the boys “Trek” to get golf balls (it’s easier to buy them); the Red Castle run/hike in the cold rain; the Bridger Lake Trail run at 10,000 feet; etc.. The real highlight for me was spending five days with some great people. Thanks to all of you for your help and cooperation. I know I can get a little cranky, but that comes with old age. It really was a great week of running and fun, and I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. We will be a better TEAM because of this trip.

SEASON IS GETTING CLOSE
August 16th is the Dart Challenge 5k. I would like EVERYONE to try to make it to this race. The cost is $15 which covers the awards, a t-shirt and breakfast. I will reimburse $10 to everyone who registers online by Thursday. That’s a good deal: a race, t-shirt and breakfast for $5. This is a road race open to everyone- it’s not a “high school” race. It will give us a good chance to see where our fitness level is at. Register online at: http://www.runnercard.com./e/runner.Main?meet=1563. Parents, siblings, everyone can run this race. Barnes Park is located at 900 west 200 north in Kaysville.
August 30th is the first “real” competition for the TEAM. We will go to the Grass Relays in American Fork. Only three weeks to get ready to see how we stack up against the top programs in the state.

Track and Field begins August 15th. Here are some good sites to help you enjoy the competition:

Lopez Lomong carried the flag for the U.S. at the Opening Ceremonies. For a good read, check out his story. It makes the quote below make more sense.

"For the rest of us, who have generally eaten well, felt safe and experienced total hopelessness only in sad movies, (Lopez) Lomong is a gift. He lights up the room again and puts a Band-Aid on the cynicism. If you are a writer, you want to tell his story, even if dozens have preceded you. You want to tell it better, to grip the reader just in case your predecessors haven't. And then you sit in the audience on the morning of the opening ceremony and realize you need do nothing more than listen and take notes, because Lomong is telling it to you, for you, and better than ever before....We have a world full of politicians and diplomatic spinners and we have only one Lopez Lomong.
Too bad it isn't the other way around"

SEND IN YOUR MILEAGE/WORKOUT LOG!!!! And if you haven’t sent me your time for the Eric Child 5k that was run on August 2nd, please do so.
Let’s have a great week of workouts and get ready for the fall season.
WORKOUTS THIS WEEK

TUESDAY- 7:00 pm at Steeds Park (1000 west 300 north, Clearfield). NOTE THAT WE WILL MEET IN THE EVENING TUESDAY AND THURSDAY. We need to get used to running in the afternoons.
THURSDAY- 7:00 pm at Jensen Park
SATURDAY- Dart Challenge- meet at Barnes Park in Kaysville at 7:15 am.
SEASON IS GETTING CLOSE
August 16th is the Dart Challenge 5k. I would like EVERYONE to try to make it to this race. The cost is $15 which covers the awards, a t-shirt and breakfast. XC Update - August 4
ERIC CHILD 5k FUN RUN
Great job by several Titans at this 5k fund raiser for Eric Child. Jake Rossmango ran away from the field and was the overall winner. The next three spots were taken by members of the TEAM. Preston Williams, Kyle Kelly and Phillip Helm were the next three finishers. Mikelann Wilcox was the first finisher for the women. She was closely followed by Aubrey Eddy, Lindsey McFarland, Mckenna Peterson and Erika Hansen. Other boys running well were Jaxon Hansen, Brandon Yardley, Cody Trease, and Dylan Rossmango. Rob Wilcox, Bob Williams, John Rossmango and the Old Man also ran with the first three representing Titan Cross Country very well. TIMES: I didn’t get your times. Please send them to me with your mileage updates.
It was great seeing about 45 Titan Football players and coaches participate in the run, supporting a worthy cause. Tanner Burton and Rick Reardon were the first football players to finish and ran very respectable times, somewhere in the 21-22 minute range. That is the image that more accurately reflects Syracuse Football, Syracuse athletics, and Syracuse High in general instead of what has been gracing the airwaves and newspapers recently. The Syracuse High community has taken some shots- maybe this will help give a more accurate picture of what our image should be.
WORKOUTS THIS WEEK
For those not going to the Uintah’s for the High Altitude Camp, push yourself to get in some quality miles on your own. This should be the best week for everyone, with your highest mileage of the summer, not just those heading to the mountains. Try to follow the workouts as closely as possible.
SEASON IS GETTING CLOSE

While most think the Olympics begin 08/08/08, the first week is just to get you warmed up for Track and Field (or "Athletics" as the rest of the world appropriately calls the sport). Track and Field begins August 15th. Here are some good sites to help you get fired up for the Games:

XC Update - July 28, 2008
DESERET NEWS 10K
Great job by those who ran the Deseret News 10k on the 24th. It was a fun race with some great efforts. Jake Rossmango was our top finisher running 39:56, an average of about 6:25 / mile pace. Kyle Kelly was right behind finishing in 40:33. Clayton Bergloff ran 44:55. Each of his 5k’s were PR’s for him. Freshmen Grant Patterson (51:01) and Dylan Rossmango (52:09) also had great races in their 10k debuts. For the girls, Mikelann Wilcox ran 47:50 to finish first for us. Lindsey McFarland (53:05) and Aubrey Eddy (55:22) also ran very well. The Old Man, Rob Wilcox, and the Much Older Man, myself, also reached the finish line before the morticians caught up with us. Rob ran 47:05 and I ran 45:11. It’s a good thing it wasn’t a 10,005 meter race- I may not have made it to the finish line.
WORKOUTS THIS WEEK
Monday- Trails. Meet at the school at 6:30 am or at Fernwood Campground at 7:00 am.
Tuesday- Your workout log did not have a site. I am changing the workout and we will meet at Syracuse High at 7:00 am.
Thursday- Meet at Jensen Park at 7:00 am.
RACE THIS WEEK
I hope we can get as many of you as possible to run the fun run Saturday. It is a fund raiser for Eric Child, who has Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia. It will start at 8:00 am at 2841 west, 1300 north in Clinton. The cost is $10. I will pay for anyone who needs the help.
HIGH ALTITUDE CAMP
All of those going to the High Altitude Camp in the Uintah’s need to have their money, medical waiver and either A or B form turned in by Tuesday, July 29th. If something has come up and you can’t go, let me know IMMEDIATELY. We will be buying supplies the latter part of the week and need to have an exact number. Also, we need rides. If your parents can drive up or bring a group back, please let me know. We will pay for their gas.
RECRUIT
We need more bodies. Encourage your friends to come out and give XC a try.
SUMMER POINT PROGRESS
As you know (or should know), I have been keeping track of mileage, workout attendance, workout logs submitted, races run, etc. Leading in the point race so far this summer are:
311 - Kyle Kelly
301 - Jake Rossmango
221 - Grant Patterson
212 - Aubrey Eddy
206- Austin Costley
202 - Tyrell Pearce
201 - Preston Williams
193 - Hilary Peterson
193 - Mikelann Wilcox
Jake is leading the mileage race with 331 so far. Kyle is right behind with 313 for the summer.
Many of you could climb up the list if you would update your mileage, etc.. The top finisher will get a free pair of running shoes. Those finishing high at the end of the summer training period will also be rewarded.
"I want this inner feeling to be known by the younger athletes, so they understand what that love of running is all about, I want to pass on my love and feeling for running… I would like younger runners to understand earlier than I did, that winning a gold medal is not always the difference between success and failure. If you do anything in life to the top most of your ability you are always a winner whether you come first in the race of life or not. Self achievement is the key to happiness and well being. It is a key which has unlocked my life and I would like it to do the same for others." -Wilson Kipketer

XC Update - July 14th
TIME TO GET SERIOUS!!!!
While many of you have been working hard this summer, many more of you have not been performing at a level that will help you or the TEAM reach their potential. It won’t do any good to concern ourselves with what we haven’t done so far- only focus on what we can now do to make the most of the 2008 Cross Country season.
"When nothing seems to help, go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two. Know that is was not that blow that did it - but all that had gone first."
Work hard now- this is the time for the "100 blows" without much to see from your efforts. If you properly prepare, the "101st", or breakthrough performance, will be a great experience. GET COMMITTED AND HAMMERING NOW!!!
TEAM WORKOUTS THIS WEEK
Monday- 7:00 am Trail Run at Fernwood Campground. Meet at Fernwood at 7:00 am or Syracuse High at 6:30 am. I will hand out the new workouts and more info on "SHARC" (Syracuse High Altitude Running Camp).
Tuesday- 7:00 am at Syracuse High.
Thursday- 7:00 am at Layton Commons Park (west of Layton High School).
DEADLINES
Monday- High Altitude commitment- I need to know how many t-shirts to order. You don’t have to pay anything yet, just let me know if you are going to camp.
Tuesday- $20 and Entry Info for the Deseret News 10k. I got the meet director to extend our deadline a couple days.
COMMUNICATION
If you have run any races and haven’t reported your times to me, please do so. Also, PLEASE send me your workout logs at the end of each week.
RACE RESULTS
Good job by those who ran races recently. Austin Costley turned in good times of 18:23 and 18:40 in his two races. Kyle Kelly ran 19:50 and Brandon Yardley 21:25 in races on the 4th. Hannah Williams’ 20:55 won the women’s race at Clearfield. Mikelann Wilcox ran 24:26 to also finish high.
OLYMPIC TRIALS HIGHLIGHTS
In my way of thinking, there is nothing better than spending eight days watching track and field. It’s even better when it’s in Eugene, Oregon, Track Town USA. The city has earned the nickname. There were over 20,000 people at the meet every day, and they were all extremely knowledgeable and LOUD. Imagine all of them clapping, cheering and stomping for all 25 laps of the 10,000 meter run- what an atmosphere. It was great watching athletes reach their goals- making the US Olympic TEAM, and sad to see even more just fall short. The emotions ran high in each event.
For me, the meet highlight was Lindsey Anderson from Morgan placing 2nd in the Steeplechase. She will be in Beijing. She’s a great runner, and a better person. Great interview link:
http://track.flocasts.org/videos/coverage/view_video/234031-us-olympic-track-field-team-trials/68743-lindsey-anderson-2nd-steeple
Other Buhrley highlights:
Men’s 800- it was a sweep for Eugene-trained athletes. Andrew Wheating, a sophomore at Oregon, didn’t even think he would be running in the trials- he barely made it in. He finished 2nd with a huge PR. Christian Smith dove at the line to get 3rd and narrowly edge out the 7-time national champion. Nick Symmonds came from last to first over the last 250 meters to win. In fact, all three qualifiers were in the last places with about 400 meters to go. Here’s a link to the race- it’s well worth your time to watch it.
http://www.ktvb.com/video/index.html?nvid=259399
Women’s 5000/10,000- Kara Goucher and Shalane Flanagan qualified in both- not big upsets. In the 10,000, Amy Begley ran the last 5000 just 10 seconds slower than her 5000 PR to get 3rd and make the TEAM for Beijing.
Men’s 1500/5000- Bernard Lagat dominated both races to capture the titles. He looked great. The first three in the 1500 are naturalized U.S. citizens. Lopez Lomong is one of the "Lost Boys of Sudan", and escaped to come to the U.S.
Men’s Pole Vault- Derek Miles and Jeff Hartwig finished 1-2. One of my former Davis vaulters, Mark Calvin, trained with them in Arkansas for about five years and says they are great guys. Hartwig is 40 years old!!!
Women’s Pole Vault- American Record-Holder Jenn Stuczynski missed her first two attempts at her opening height. She looked terrible- and faced not making the TEAM. She cleared it on her third attempt, then went on to break her American Record clearing 16'01.75". Erica Bartolina PR’ed twice (her first in four years) to place 3rd and make the TEAM.
Women’s 800- Hazel Clark won in 1:59. Why neat? Because her family was sitting by us.
Men’s 100 dash- Tyson Gay ran the fastest ever 100 (9.68) in the trials, but it was wind-aided. He came back in the finals to set an American Record in a legal 9.77.
Womern’s 1500 run- High school junior Jordan Hasay (about 5' tall, hair about 3' long) ran 4:14.50 to make the finals. It was a national high school record. About 10,000 fans started chanting in unison "come to Oregon".
Men’s Hammer- James Parker, 1994 Northridge graduate, did not make the team. He won in 2004 and competed in Athens, but injuries hampered his preparation. After he took his 6th throw, he knelt down and kissed the ring. After being an All-American and several times National Champion, he has retired and will enter Chiropractic School next month.
Women’s Shot Put- Jill Camerena, coached by a friend of mine, finished 3rd by 3-inches and made the TEAM. Both were stoked!!
Women’s 200 dash- Allison Felix ran 21.82 to easily win. Any race she runs is a highlight- what mechanics, and smile.
Women’s 100 hurdles- Lolo Jones ran 12.29, the fastest ever run by and American- but it was wind-aided. Still, a great race.
OK, I’ve probably lost you. In case you are still reading, trust me, it was great. There was drama in every event. If interested, there are some great interviews and articles at:
http://track.flocasts.org/

Great meet- you owe it to yourself to go sometime.

Titan XC Update - June 23, 2008
CONGRATULATIONS!!!Haley Busby was selected (I think unanimously) as Miss Outstanding Teen Syracuse tonight. It was obvious to everyone in attendance (well, at least me) that she was head and shoulders above the rest. Great on the piano, the interview, with the volleyball, and evening gown. Way to go!!
WORKOUTS- Good job on the workouts this last week. Our numbers on Thursdays have not been as high as on Mondays. Let’s make a concerted effort to get to every workout. The bike ride on Tuesday and Ben Lomond Peak 16-miler on Saturday added some variety. Great job by Kyle Kelly and Jake and Dylan Rossmango who battled snow fields, falling rocks, etc., and accompanied the old coach to Ben Lomond Peak. We may do it again this summer when more of the snow has melted.

Titan XC Update – June 8, 2008
GREAT FIRST WEEK
Man, what a difference a year makes. We had 28 on the trails Monday, 31 at Fisher Park Thursday. We seldom had more than 5 of 6 for any workouts last summer. Let’s not only keep the numbers up, let’s keep them growing. If you have been a little scared or hesitant to show up- don’t be. We have runners of all abilities and all levels. You won’t be left behind.
TRAINING LOGS/MILEAGE
Remember to send me your Training Logs and Mileage each week (preferably each Sunday). As the summer goes on, this can help me chart your progress and individualize your workouts. Try to increase your total mileage each week. Depending on your current fitness level, you should be somewhere between 20 to 35 miles. If you are consistent and run daily, this isn’t hard to accomplish. Summer mileage is the key to fall success.
UPCOMING WORKOUTS
Monday we will run the trails again. Either meet at the high school at 6:30 am or at Fernwood Campground at 7:00 am. Thursday we will meet at Jensen Park at 7:00 am.
ROAD RACES
Reminder of the Gerald Anderson 5k June 14th in Morgan. If you haven’t registered, you still can at Striders in Layton or at the race. I have registration forms for the Clearfield Freedom Run that will be held July 4th. Pick one up at the workouts if you are interested.
WEB SITES
I have posted the Cross Country workouts, schedule, and some pictures on the following web site: www.titanxc08.blogspot.com. You can also see the final track performance lists, updates, etc., at: www.syracusetrack.blogspot.com. Become a fan and student of your sport. A couple of good sites are: www.dyestat.com and www.letsrun.com. Looking for some track/running pictures? Try www.sporting-heroes.net/ A good site to follow collegiate track and cross country is: www.trackshark.com.
THIS WEEKEND
The Prefontaine Classic will be televised Sunday at 2:00 pm on channel 5. Luke Puskedra will be running in the meet attempting to break the national high school two-mile record. Also, at the Bislett Games today, the World Record for the Women’s 5000 was broken today. Ethiopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba ran 14:11.15. That’s a mile pace of about 4:35!!! Not bad.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK"It is one of the strange ironies of this strange life that those who work the hardest, who subject themselves to the strictest discipline, who give up certain pleasurable things in order to achieve a goal, are the happiest. When you see 20 or 30 runners line up for a distance race in some meet, don't pity them, don't feel sorry for them. Better envy them instead." Brutus Hamilton
