Titan XC Update - Sept 29, 2008

GREAT WEEK FOR TITAN XC
This was a week in which great deal of progress was shown.  There were some great workouts and a very tough race at Weber High. The benefits will hopefully be shown at the Region and State Championships.

OPEN REGION @ WEBER
With all of the region teams except Davis competing, the meet gave us a little indication of where things shape up at this time.  The Girls placed 2nd behind Weber while the Boys tied for 2nd, though losing the tie-breaker to Fremont.  Weber also won the boys.
The 3.1 mile course was very hilly and provided a real challenge. Hannah Williams was our top finisher in the ladies race as she placed 4th in 20:36.  McKayla Williams (7th, 21:09), Abby Rich (9th, 21:43), Mikelann Wilcox (10th, 21:50), and Kiana Tebbs (18th, 22:55) were the other scoring athletes.  Taylee Hamblin (19th, 23:01) and Aubrey Eddy (41st, 25:15) completed the varsity runners.
Austin Costley ran a tough race to finish 3rd in 17:32.  Phillip Helms had another great race placing 7th in 17:54.  Tyrell Pearce (11th, 18:12), Preston Williams (17th, 18:31) and Brandon Yardley (28th, 18:47) were our other scoring athletes.  Dallin Riggs (29th, 18:51) and Kyle Kelly (37th, 19:08) completed the varsity squad.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Abby Rich, who continues to show improvement after battling injuries most of the season, and Tyrell Pearce, who has really made an impact on our TEAM in his first year of competing in Cross Country.

Update - September 22, 2008

Titan XC Update - Sept 22, 2008

DAVIS CLIPPER INVITATIONAL
Both Boys and Girls teams turned in great performances to place 2nd at the 21st Davis Clipper Invitational.  This meet is for all of the Davis County schools.  Davis High captured both titles for the 12th straight year.  Finishing 2nd is a great accomplishment.  Last year the girls finished 4th and the boys 8th.  The Titans are definitely on the rise this year.
Leading the way for the girls were the Williams sisters.  Hannah finished 7th running 17:42 over the 2.75 mile course.  McKayla was right behind in 8th running 18:28.  Abby Rich (11th, 19:00), Mikelann Wilcox (12th, 19:19), Kiana Tebbs (18th, 19:56) and Taylee Hamblin (19th, 20:03) ran very tough races to pace the Lady Titans.
Austin Costley and Jake Rossmango took the race out fast, leading for the first 1 ½ miles.  Austin held on to finish 6th running 15:19.  Preston Williams (10th, 15:40), Jake (12th, 15:41), Phillip Helms (20th, 15:58), Tyrell Pearce (22nd, 16:00), Dallin Riggs (29th, 16:25) and Kyle Kelly (39th, 16:35) rounded out the scoring for Syracuse.
WAHSATCH RENDEZVOUS
More evidence of great improvement was shown at the Wahsatch Rendezvous held at the Cottonwood Complex Saturday.  With over 20 schools running, the girls finished 6th and the boys 8th.  Last year they were 9th and 18th.  In 2007 the total time for the seven scoring girls was 2:40:19.  This year it was 2:29:57.  The boys improved from 2:02:53 to 1:43:07, an average improvement of over 2 ½ minutes per runner.
The unique format consists of a series of seven races pitting all #7 runners against each other, #6 runners, etc.  The points from the individual races are then added up to determine the team places.  The course was 2.9 miles long.  The girls seven scoring athletes were Hannah Williams (5th, 19:34), McKayla Williams (5th, 20:13), Abby Rich (6th, 20:47), Mikelann Wilcox (6th, 21:05), Kiana Tebbs (8th, 22:11), Taylee Hamblin (6th, 21:32), and Aubrey Eddy (9th, 24:32).
The boys 52 points, just six points out of sixth place.  The scoring athletes for the Titans were Austin Costley (9th, 16:38), Jake Rossmango (6th, 16:53), Preston Williams (7th, 17:00), Tyrell Pearce (9th, 17:33), Phillip Helms (2nd, 17:20), Dallin Riggs (8th, 17:46), and Kyle Kelly (11th, 18:33).  Brandon Yardley ran a great race to place 7th in the J.V. race running 17:37.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as Athletes of the Week were Taylee Hamblin, who had a great, breakout races at both meets this week, Phillip Helms, who continues to improve every week, and Kyle Kelly.  Kyle’s combined times in the two races were more than nine minutes faster than last year.  It shows what a year of hard work and dedication can do.
OPEN REGION MEET AT WEBER
Our only race this week will be Wednesday at Weber High.  We will use the race to work on hills and mental toughness.  It will be good preparation for State.  The girls will run at 3:45 and the boys at 4:15.  There will only be the two races.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

Titan XC Update - Sept 8, 2008

PRE-REGION
What a difference a year makes. In 2007, the Titan boys were last in the 8-team race. This year, they finished 2nd behind defending 5A Champion Davis. The times over the 2.0 mile course averaged about 1:30 faster than last year. Austin Costley (8th, 10:54), Jake Rossmango (13th, 11:06), Preston Williams (16th, 11:11), Tyrell Pearce (26th, 11:31) and Phillip Helms (29th, 11:32) led the Titan scoring. Kyle Kelly (12:09) and Brandon Yardley (12:11) rounded out the varsity squad.
The girls were equally impressive finishing 4th, only 12 points from 2nd. The Williams sisters led the way with Hannah finishing 6th in 12:50 and McKayla 7th in 12:53. Abby Rich (17th, 13:38), Mikelann Wilcox (34th, 14:50) and Aubrey Eddy (36th, 15:06) were the other scorers for the Lady Titans.
In J.V. action, CJ Scothern was the top finisher in the boys running 12:40.
Complete results can be found at: www.titanxc08.com.

WASATCH INVITATIONAL
Cool, crisp air, 3.3 miles of trails on hills, great competition, etc. It doesn’t get any better. The great Titan performances continued Saturday at Wasatch Mountain Park in Midway. Both squads finished 7th with over 25 schools competing.
Again, the Williams sisters were very impressive. Hannah covered the extremely tough course in 23:19 to finish 7th. McKayla’s 23:42 was good enough for 10th. Abby Rich (25:02), Mikelann Wilcox (25:30) and Kiana Tebbs (26:32) completed the scoring. The other varsity runners were Taylee Hamblin (28:02) and Aubrey Eddy (28:38). Haley Busby was the top finisher in the J.V. running 29:20.
For the boys, Austin Costley was again our top finisher covering the course in 19:40. Preston Williams (20:34), Jake Rossmango (20:51), Tyrell Pearce (20:52) and Phillip Helms (21:23) rounded out the scoring. Weston Atkins (23:02), CJ Scothern (23:13), Willis Ellsworth (23:40), Dylan Rossmango (23:50) and Alex Garrett (24:02) led the boys J.V.
More detailed information will be sent when official results are made available.

Update - September 1, 2008

GRASS RELAYS
The Titans first trip to the Grass Relays at American Fork was a very successful trip. With most of the top programs and individuals in the state present, Syracuse finished very high. The top performance was turned in by Hannah Williams. She ran 12:58 over the 2-mile course to finish in 15th place in the Varsity Girls race. McKayla Williams (13:18), Mikelann Wilcox (13:54), Abby Rich (14:13) and Aubrey Eddy led the Lady Titans to a 12th place finish. 25 teams were in the race.
In the Boys Varsity, Austin Costley turned in the top time finishing in 11:24. Jake Rossmango (11:55), Preston Williams (12:01), Tyrell Pearce (12:14) and Phillip Helms (12:16) also ran very well in securing the 18th place finish. 30 schools competed in the race.
Brandon Yardley ran a great race with his 12:24 time placing him in the top 30 in the Freshman-Sophomore J.V. race. Kyle Kelly was our top finisher in the Junior-Senior J.V. race as he ran 12:48. Alex Garrett was right behind in 12:54.
Overall, it was a great meet after a hard week of workouts. Bigger and better results are just around the corner.

WORKOUTS
Great week of workouts. I was very impressed with the work ethic, but more impressed with the leadership so many of you are showing. It’s great to feel like I can tell you what to do and know that it will get done. THANKS to all who are working hard in so many ways to ensure the success of the TEAM.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Chosen as the first Athletes of the Week were are “fearless freshmen”, Mikelann Wilcox and Brandon Yardley. They both have been working hard all summer and had great races at the Grass Relays. I don’t know if the people Mikelann threw up on in the finish chute would agree with the choice, but they didn’t get a vote.
